Erst mal zum Stanley Park wegen des Hollow Tree. Das war ein sehr langer Spaziergang um den Park. Der Hollow Tree ist meiner Ansicht nach nix besonderes. Er (eine grosser Zeder mit 12m Umfang) wurde mal vom Blitz getroffen und war danach halt innen hohl. Da er nun recht morsch ist und schon längst nicht mehr von selbst stehenbleibt wollte man ihn endlich dem Erdboden gleich machen (im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: Man wollte einen Gehweg mit ihm pflastern) Nun wurde aber entschlossen ihn wieder herzurichten. Etwa 250000 $ (private Spenden) soll das kosten. Geldverschwendung! Machen Leute haben zu viel Geld…

I booked a 10 foot truck but they gave me a 14 foot for the same price ($19.95 instead of $29.95) because they didn’t want to move trucks around just to get the 10 foot out.

I didn’t make it all the way to the driveway because the cul de sac wasn’t cleared and the snow was just too much. I thought 5 hours would be plenty to throw all our stuff in and unload it at the new place but we ran out of time. It was 3pm already so I decided to go and come back with the car to get the rest. I hurried up but I didn’t make it back to U-Haul in time. 5:25. 25 minutes late… I dropped off the key and came back the next day. That old Dodge 3500 truck is thirsty! I put in gas worth $20 (37km)! So the bill came up to $67.82 ($0.69/km + $19.95 + $15.00 insurance + environmental fee of $1.00 + $3.08 GST and $3.26 PST)
The move cost me about $90 (diesel included).

Thursday night – my last night at Caragh, my last night in IRELAND! I planned to work the whole day (finishing at 1 am) but then I got a call from Ati saying that Milly is still not eating anything and constipation giving her a hard time as well. She’s been like that the whole week probably sensing that we’re up to something.

So I said farewell to everybody and went home. That last day I finally sold my lil Nissan Micra to a polish guy (Marek?) for a 1000 €uro. He started with 50 € bills and the bills became smaller and smaller and the rest he gave me in coins. He got a good deal and I was kinda happy that I got rid of it as well. I picked up an Avis rental car (Opel Safira) for 75 € a day at the Galway airport before work and left my Nissan at the gas station opposite the airport. Marek and I picked it up later.

I got home at 8 or 9 pm and finished packing. I thought 6 suitcases would be plenty but I ended up leaving some items, like the Fendt 930 Vario toy tractor mys sister sent us and the laminator, behind. As usual we left in a hurry and fortunately I didn’t leave anything important in the house. Well – I forgot the bag with the food Ati prepared but we didn’t starve.

Around 1:30 am we left Gort heading for Dublin airport. Arriving on time, I just had to find a gas station (to avoid any surcharges!) and, of course, the Avis place! All done I found my way back to the entrance and we were all set to leave this island!

The day before we left, Ati checked the British Airways website and found out that the airport has a huge problem with the luggage system at terminal 4 (OURS!) and that we can’t bring any checked bags with us if we still wanna fly or rebook for a later flight (AND WHEN IS THAT?!?). Great! Whatever! Checking the airport’s website, they had a news update saying that everything’s fine again. BA didn’t update their website, of course. Well, keep us in the dark – I still thought BA is a good airline (isn’t it like the “British Lufthansa”?). So we we’re relieved and thought everything’s gonna be alright when even BA finally updated their website.

Broadway welcomed its newest star and raised the curtain on the largest metropolitan McDonald’s restaurant in America, located at the center of New York’s tourism and entertainment district — Broadway & 42nd Street. Broadway show cast members celebrated the premiere of the new McDonald’s and welcomed their newest neighbor with a special performance from the Tony Award-winning show, 42nd Street. During the day-long celebration, New York’s historic 42nd Street was renamed “McDonald’s Way.”

The new 17,500-square-foot McDonald’s restaurant, housed in the landmark Candler building, features a full-length theatre marquee with 7,500 light bulbs, eighteen 42-inch plasma screens and twenty-seven 15-inch monitors to entertain customers. Interior designer Charles Morris Mount created a “backstage” ambiance for the restaurant’s decor by exposing the building’s original brickwork and using authentic theatrical lighting fixtures to illuminate the space in dramatic style.

“We are thrilled to be part of the buzz of Broadway & 42nd Street and to serve the community of New York City,” said Irwin Kruger, owner/operator of the Broadway & 42nd Street McDonald’s restaurant. “The restaurant is designed to be a natural fit with our famous Broadway neighbors, both in its architectural design and in the fun and excitement we’ll provide for the thousands of New York residents and visitors who pass by each day.”
